Page 179: The author gives credit to mentors that forced him to get serious about his behavior. Do you have a mentor? How have they helped you this far? Just as Wes Moore Stated on page 179, 3rd paragraph, that “When we’re young, it sometimes seems as if the world doesn’t exist outside our city, block, house, or room. we make decisions based on what we see in our limited world.” This is why Wes had a mentor (s) to assist him see beyond and beyond the narrow view of where he was and where he will go. Being surrounded by such people and support helped Wes become more conscious about his life choices and the "boundless possibilities of the wider world explored within himself." We all need mentors in our lives because when we fail to believe in ourselves, there is always someone else who is always serving and believing in us. I have 1-3 mentors that I go to for various reasons. My spiritual mother is my first mentor, my second mentor is like another aunt to me, and my third me...

The Other West Moore Blog Prompt: Page 100: "Have you ever had to give someone news that you knew would break their heart? How did you build up the courage?"

Blog Prompt Question: Page 100: The other Wes Moore needed to tell his mother that he got Alicia pregnant. Have you ever had to give someone news that you knew would break their heart? How did you build up the courage? I often look back on the time I had to end a five-year relationship that was hurting rather than healing me because I feel like I'm experiencing the need to deliver something that would shatter someone's heart. Even if everything appeared to be going well at the time, it was surprising for me to take this action because I was stuck in a situation where I wasn't actually happy. I had to find the strength to let go and tell my ex-boyfriend that I was unable to continue because of this. It's always easier said than done. I recall the night I did it; I was incredibly anxious, trembling, and I had to put the phone down every time. Before someone can deliver terrible news, a process takes place in which numerous thoughts enter your head. You should always a...

Blog Prompt 6 : Page xi “The author explains that Wes Moore’s life is different because he made different decisions when it came to life choices. Have you ever made a decision that you believe could have altered your life path?”   I appreciate how realistic this topic is since I am currently living on the changed life path that my decision put me on. We all have to make decisions in our lives, which might be for the better or for the worse, but decisions must be made every day. From waking up and contemplating what to wear to work to contemplating signing off on an investment arrangement with a bank, and so on. Outcomes are linked to life, and life is linked to the decisions we make. It's a three-cord set that works together. West Moore made it very obvious that the life results that the other Wes Moore experienced were the result of major life decisions.  I decided to move to NJCU from Saint Croix, a tiny island in the Virgin Islands, about 4 and a half years ago. It was a c...

The Other Wes Moore: Blog prompt- "Are We Products of Our Environment or Products of Our Expectations?"

Image
As I consider the blog article titled "Are we products of our environment or products of our expectations?" It reminds me of a similar saying that states you are what you eat. I mention this because if we say we are what we eat, then many of us will be considered very unhealthy, but we are not precisely what we eat, but what we perceive it to be. It's the same with being a product of our environmental expectations; it's all about thought and perception. Growing up, I used to hear a lot of the seniors in my community talk about how when young people get into trouble, that's all they're doomed to do so for the rest of their life. Depending on where they came from, they would sometimes use it alone to foretell the course of that person's life, especially if they were jailed. Everyone would be exactly where everyone else expects them to be if we were products of our environment, but if we are products of our expectations, we end up exactly where we exp...

Image
Parties, welcome back bashments, leading the Greek sororities and fraternities, ice cream socials, basketball games, and more are just some of the typical highlights that highlight the social aspect of one's college experience. When we look beyond the hype and into the hidden gray areas of what college is truly about, we see depth, declining enrollment rates, a lack of funding, high tuition costs, and more. We tend to emphasize the benefits of what makes college enjoyable, but we fail to recognize the things that we will carry with us in our back pockets that are more fundamentally establishing a future career than social activities. The costs that are heavily emphasized in order to create this social life of colleges are not the same intentions that are for education. Andrew Hacker and Claudia's Dreifus, the authors, certainly highlight key points within colleges that are more about money than education. Tuition charges have more than doubled in recent generations, and we c...
